How To Find A Reiki School or Teacher
How Do I Decide On A Teacher Or School?
Prices vary greatly between Reiki Teachers. Unfortunately, for many, this is the
greatest deciding factor for the would-be student when considering what Reiki
Teacher they will study under.
Because very little is standard or even required in Reiki training, the type
of training offered by one teacher may vary greatly from that of the next
teacher. Class content, practice time, ability to teach, material offered, personal
motives / agendas, etc.. , will often be overlooked by the student in order to get
the best price. Because nothing in the Reiki world is standard – the quality of Reiki
Training that you will receive from one teacher to the next will vary greatly, as will
the cost.
Before settling down and deciding on one particular Reiki Teacher, YOU
need to do a whole lot of homework. First, you need to educate yourself on
what Reiki is. Understand the difference between Japanese Reiki and Western
Reiki. Then, learn what to expect from your Reiki training.
Next, evaluate your teachers – ask ask ask questions! Find out how much
experience they have teaching, designing courses, their background,
linage or Tradition, etc.. . Determine if the course content is what you are
looking for – is it below, above, or equal to what others are offering & how does
the price compare? Quite honestly, you will get what you pay for (meaning that if
you look for the cheapest route, that is exactly what you are going to get).
Conversely, some charge ridiculous prices for some not so important details, or,
just because they are ‘popular’. Be cautious – protect yourself by doing your
homework (Keep in mind that in America, the ‘‘master’’ level class was first offered
by Takata for $10,000!). You can find out the average price of classes by calling
Reiki teachers and talking with them, or, use the internet.
Also take into consideration the level of experience and understanding
the teacher has about Japanese culture and beliefs. This is tremendously
important. Most Western Reiki ‘masters’ have very little knowledge of Eastern
concepts and beliefs above their own Reiki training. In order to fully convey the
teachings of Reiki, the teacher needs to have well rounded education and
experience in these things. Interestingly, by completing the TJRS Level 1 course,
you will have a greater understanding of Japanese Reiki & history than the
majority of Western Reiki ‘masters’ today.
Be cautious of teachers who use a lot of ‘new age’ jargon (angels,
spirit guides, vibrations, chakras, crystals, etc… .). Reiki has been inundated with
many non- reiki / non- Japanese beliefs. What you may get as Reiki training may
include a lot of new age filler as its contents, making what you are learning less
about Reiki and more about foreign concepts and abstracts. This is fine if this is
what you want and this is what they tell you they are teaching.
When determining cost, divide the cost of training by the total hours of
training. This gives you a dollar per hour figure and more accurately reflects how
much you are getting for your money. Also, find out what kind of material and
support is offered to reinforce the teachings after the class is finished. Because
Reiki is so involved, it cannot adequately be taught in 1 or 2 days per level - no
matter what others may say. Be very cautious of those teachers who claim to
teach Reiki level 1 to ‘master’/teacher in a 1 or 2 day class. Remember, even with
extended class room training, the student will need support and instruction after
the class is over.
Lastly, interview potential teachers before you decide to study under them. Do
you and they mesh well? Are they knowledgeable? Patient? Etc... . Go with the
one you feel most comfortable with.
