Reiki FAQ'S
Q. Why Stress Traditional Japanese Reiki? Isn't all Reiki
The Same?

NO. Not all Reiki is the same. Most often, Reiki practitioners will advertise that they do 'Reiki'.
This leaves the impression that all Reiki is the same. However, in todays modern Reiki
movement, there are literally thousands of different
styles of Reiki, with new style being invented
daily.

After WWII, the Reiki that was introduced to America was dramatically changed so as to make it
"less Japanese". This new Reiki was taught as a hand healing practice almost exclusively. It
was taught in a very rapid fashion. The spiritual / philosophical practices were almost
completely removed. At this time, the history was rewritten, so as to make Usui Mikao a
Christian and a Doctor, of which he was neither. The levels were taught with no manuals or note
taking. The entire system was stripped down and stream-lined into a very 'American friendly'
variant of the original path and practice - called
Usui Shiki Ryoho. This is the system that
propagated the Reiki movement here in the West and the rest of the world (99% of ALL reiki
styles today can be traced back through this school of thought).

Since that time, people went on to invent their own styles of Reiki, feeling free to mix this
Western Usui Shiki Ryoho with whatever beliefs and practices that they felt drawn to. The new
age community, for example, combined things like angels, spirit guides, totem animals,
chakras, crystals, & even channeling / communication with the dead and things like 'psychic
surgery' - none of which have anything to do with Reiki. Stories and histories are rewritten,
conjuring all kinds of fictitious ideas - saying reiki came from Tibet, India, Mesopotamia, Atlantis,
and even outer space. Other say that the Mayans and Native Americans invented Reiki. Tales
are told that Jesus and Buddha did Reiki, as did little green men and dolphins. You can even
purcha$e Reiki candle$, food, and even bottled water!

Because of this fact, the Western world of Reiki has no standards of practice. Because of
this fact......

With all of the hodge-podge mixing and morphing, Reiki practitioners and 'masters'
themselves sometimes don't even know what style of Reiki they practice. The fact of the
matter remains that the majority (99.99%) of Western Reiki (and the other forms of Reiki in
Pittsburgh) is based in full or in part on the Americanized Usui Shiki Ryoho.

Usui Reiki Ryoho, however, is a Tradition of Japanese Reiki. Because it hasn't been introduced
to America until the past 10 years or so, it remains void of the many Western changes to Reiki.
This means that what you will receive as Reiki therapy and training remains consistent with
what Usui Mikao taught to his students. It is a uniform path and practice, based on historically
accurate and factual information within the cultural context of a Japanese Tradition. It remains a
Tradition because students are taught to honor and preserve this Traditional knowledge and
pass it along to future generations. The teachings and techniques remain intact because they
remain relevant.

Usui Reiki Ryoho is the original style of Reiki and remains the original Tradition of Reiki. The
TJRS is the only center to offer this tradition in the area.

When choosing a Therapist or Teacher for Reiki, it becomes important to understand just what
that person is going to do and what they believe. If you want to be sure that your Therapy or
Training remains consistent with Authentic Traditional Japanese Reiki, the choice is easy:
