Reiki FAQ'S
Q. What is Reiki?
The Reiki that we know today began life in the 1920's when a Japanese Tendai Buddhist
named Usui Mikao had a Satori (enlightenment) atop Kurayama mountain while contemplating
the meaning of life. After this breakthrough, Usui developed a philosophical system to live in
peace and harmony. He began teaching this path to others, called
Usui-Do.

3 years after he begins teaching his system, Usui pairs up with another man who is teaching a
similar philosophy, based on old folk Shinto practices. Contained within these teaching was a
method of hand healing, called
Teate.

3 years after this addition, Usui Mikao passes away. At this time The
Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai is
formed. The Gakkai, a memorial organization, was made up of Usui's students and friends who
wanted to preserve the work that Usui had started. Usui-Do and Teate were brought together
synergistically to create a Spiritual/Philosophical path and practice that contained hand healing
as part of its teachings. The overall goal of this system was to live ones life to the fullest, in
peace and harmony, without anger or worry. The system contained philosophies and meditative
practices aimed to promote spiritual growth, and, hand healing practices used to heal oneself -
mind, body, and spirit.

When Reiki was brought to America in the late 1930's it was simplified into primarily a hand
healing practice with most of the philosophical / spiritual teachings removed. When most
people in the West think of Reiki, they think of hand healing. This 'Americanized' system of Reiki,
called
Usui Shiki Ryoho, is the basis for 99% of all Reiki styles in America today.

From the 1980's through present day the
New Age movement has permeated the Reiki world.
Since that time, Reiki has been combined with a variety of 'interesting', confusing, and
contradicting ideas, philosophies, and beliefs that have little to do with Japan, Reiki, or the
original work that Usui had begun a little more than 70 years ago.

Usui Reiki Ryoho, the original Reiki Tradition and the system of Reiki taught by the
TJRS,
preserves the original teachings of Usui Mikao as a balance of Usui-Do (philosophy) and
Usui-Teate (Hand Healing) delivered in a professionally designed format and structure.
We are
