The Traditional Japanese Reiki Society (TJRS) is Headquartered in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and was established over 10 years ago. Our main objective is the accurate dissemination of information, teachings and practices relating to Usui Reiki Ryoho. With that being said, the TJRS is the Tri-State's only school of Reiki to teach Traditional Japanese Reiki as it was taught by Usui Mikao almost 100 years ago.
If you are looking for authentic Reiki training or therapy, you must know that today's Reiki world is filled with a great deal of misinformation. The majority of schools and practitioners out there today practice some form of Western Reiki, even if they claim that it is "traditional". Most of what is being proposed in the Reiki world today is neither historically accurate nor culturally congruent. The majority of information being offered today is filled with a lot of new-age ideas that have very little to do with the Tradition Usui Mikao originally taught and practiced.

Usui Reiki Ryoho
The Origins
The Reiki that we know today was started by a Buddhist Monk named Usui Mikao. All throughout his life he faced many hardships, having grown up in a time in Japan when Buddhism was demonized (refer to Haibutsu kishaku). He began to quest for the meaning to life. After taking up a arduous 21 day Buddhist practice that moved him to the point of death, Usui Mikao achieved Satori (enlightenment) and understood the meaning to life. He put together a Spiritual / Philosophical practice to achieve this goal; and as his memorial stone reads, Usui Mikao taught and practiced Reiho (Spiritual method).
Usui Mikao would go on to teach these methods publicly, developing a formal system and establishing a school. After 3 years, a friend of his began teaching a similar spiritual system at the Usui school. His friend went on to introduce a form of hand healing and empowerment ceremony that would later be adopted by Usui himself.
As it is Traditionally taught, Usui Reiki Ryoho is first and foremost a Tradition. It is a Spiritual Tradition where hand healing is but a small part of the overall practice.
The goal for Usui Reiho (spiritual method) and Traditional Japanese Reiki (Usui Reiki Ryoho) is to live in total peace, knowing one's purpose, being bothered by nothing. The motto at the school was unity of self through harmony and balance.
In order to achieve this goal, Usui Mikao established a formal practice centered around meditation and adhering to a moral code called the Gokai (5 principles) or Gainen (concepts). This code was based on the writings of Usui Mikao.
